Hi Tim!
I tried to focus more on this topic. But it seems to work only over fast swing drums or free-like style. If you go slow or if you play over mid – slow tempos it just sounds…bad! But i think it’s my fault here! Is there any way to play in this style even over funky/jazz tunes like “so what” ? Few examples would clear any doubt. That would be awesome!
Thank you!
Ludovico

Hi Ludovico,
Chromatic phrases must occur quickly to achieve the “high density” quality that is talked about in these lessons. That is why you will often hear this type of playing with eighth notes, sixteenth notes, or triplets.
If you play a highly chromatic or outside phrase slowly, the ear will sometimes perceive the notes as too dissonant against the chord of the moment.
Check out the 4 part “Outside Improvisation” series for a lot of examples on how to play outside lines on a single chord vamp.
Thank you for bringing this up. I will think about some ideas to post a lesson about your idea.
Best,
Tim.

Thank for your quick answer! Call me mad, but i think that the beauty of the chromatic density can really overwhelm the “traditional” way to “play outside”. Everything sounds fresh and new to the ear… It’s something related to that topic, but in a deeper way… Thank you, again!
