Hi Tim, first of all thanks for this great lessons and Material you shere with us… a friend of mine an ex student of yours Bjoessi Klütsch told me about you and after a long time for me you’r the first guitar player i really really like a lot! now i’m a big fan of yours… 😉
My question is about the chord solo you do over d-,F,C,g- @ that concert in Barcelona with yoyo mayr…
what and how you think about harmony and Substitutions over this nice but simple chord progression…
will be great if you can make a lesson or talk about that in future… or if you allready made a similar lesson where can i search?
Best wishes,
sincerely Simon

Hi Tim,

Excuse me for me to write on the topic. I think I know which video Simon is talking, this is also my curiosity to know how you think when doing these substitutions.

The original progression. || Dm7 F | C Gm7 || while you make the changes of voices and progressions the bass makes only one line playing the D and F notes.

The link to the video is here and your moment begins at 2:20 and continues until 4:53

What you do is really fascinating .. Congratulations!

You are a great inspiration to me .. Smile

This is an example of improvising chord changes, drawing on what I know about chords and what I can hear, shifting in different directions with texture and keys.
This comes from playing diatonically in different keys with the characteristic chords for each mode. See the lesson on diatonic chords for more information on this. After this, I am playing by ear, drawing upon my chordal vocabulary and what I can hear in my head. I listened to a lot of piano music, which probably leads to these types of sounds.
Best,
Tim

I should add that this particular gig was so much fun. JoJo was just amazing, and I was feeling inspired by everyone in the band. Jamboree is a very good sounding room as well. It always helps when the tone feels comfortable.

This is great, I really love this kind of improvisation with voicings and different keys, it takes the sound somewhere else.

I see it was an inspiring evening.

I’ll fulfill the dream of watching you play live, that will be soon ..

His explanation is gold.

Thanks for everything. Smile
