Hi Tim:

Let’s say I am trying to resolve a tension note by half step, for example from note B to note C on the high E string. Do you find the resolution just as effective to go from note B on the high E string to note C an octave below (G string, 5th fret)? (I guess this would be a form of octave displacement?)

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
Interesting question. It is tough to answer the question without hearing an audio example, but my initial reaction is that the resolution would be stronger without the octave displacement.
Best,
Tim

Thanks, Tim. Here’s a 251 in C. The first resolves by half step to note E. The second resolves to E an octave lower.

Hi Tom,
Great, the video helps a lot. I like them both. The half step resolution sounds more melodic. The octave displacement sounds more angular. There is a place for both in my opinion. Both phrases sound creative and interesting, so I believe that you would need to decide in the moment about what type of texture that you want to create.
Best,
Tim
