Greetings, Tim – guys!

First post here and want to thank Tim for these incredible lessons/courses. I had my share of online lessons but Tim’s material is probably the very best I ever found. So thank you!

Now about my question(s):

Tim, when speaking about “Minor Pentatonic Chordal Anchors” you chose Fmaj7 (and +) D min7 (and +) Amin7(#5) and F#7alt to go with the A minor pentatonic. I would “expect” Amin7 and Cmaj7 but of course you didn’t do that… instead you went with the ii and IV of the major key. Of course this was deliberate, but does it mean you don’t/never use, say, the A minor pent over Amin7? You’d always go with the E min pent instead?

And why that Amin7(#5)?

Thanks for reading!
Joao

Hi Joao,
Welcome to the forum! I am glad that you are enjoying the website!
I don’t recall mentioning Amin7#5 for that. Can you direct me to the video and the time in the video? That would be helpful.
Yes, I would use the A minor pentatonic with Amin7 and Cmaj as well. Those are good choices.
Best,
Tim

Hi Tim,

I’m enjoying the lessons very much – this is close to a goldmine 🙂

I don’t think you mentioned the Amin7#5 on a video, but it’s on Lesson’s 2 PDF, here (page 2):
http://members.internetguitarl…..-chart.pdf

Since watching the first videos I’ve been playing with that idea, and I like the sound of it a lot – using the pentatonics considering a maj7 as a IV and a min7 as a ii 🙂

Thnak you for you reply!
Joao

Hi Joao,
These are chord anchors, so the voicings are anchors to visualize the pentatonic fingering. The min7#5 is a nice voicing as a substitute for the Dmin chord. It is a nice visual shape to attach to a pentatonic fingering.
Best,
Tim

Thank you, Tim!

I’ve been working on it – and on a lot of other lessons here, all are amazing 🙂 The chord anchors concept is really nice, and basically the same thing you use when improvising with the chord voicings (as stated on your Improvisation Course) right?

Thanks again!
Joao

Hi Joao,
Yes, having multiple chord voicings that serve as anchors on the fretboard is very helpful for improvisation.
Best,
Tim

but if we play the Eb 9 chord on the 6th string root our anchor chord would lead us to play a Gb minor penta. can you help me on this thanks

Hi Goldflame,
Thanks! I am glad that you are enjoying the lessons.
I would still play the Bb minor pentatonic in that situation for Eb9. You would play a Gb minor pentatonic if you wanted to achieve the altered dominant sound.
Best,
Tim
